Sunshine Companion Reading Program for Critically Ill Children

Critically ill children in Shenzhen are basically concentrated in children's hospitals, and in the Department of Hematology and Oncology, there are more than 120 new cases of leukemia every year, which is a very high incidence rate in the country. In 2016, Shenzhen Children's Library, Shenzhen Children's Hospital and Southern Metropolis Daily joined hands to launch the Sunshine Reading Project, organizing professional children's reading promoters to enter the hematology oncology wards to carry out reading activities, with the aim of providing support for the hematology oncology patients who have been undergoing intensive treatment for a long period of time, and who have to bear tremendous physical and mental pressure. The aim is to provide spiritual comfort to the hemato-oncology patients who have to undergo intensive treatment for a long period of time and suffer from great physical and mental pressure.
Since the launch of the project, more than 300 activities have been organized. During this short but precious time, children can temporarily forget about their illnesses and immerse themselves in the sea of stories, while parents can also take a break and relax for a while.

Starting from 2025, the Greater Bay Area ESG Promotion Association has also joined the organizers to gather the power of Hong Kong and Shenzhen to help the project together and help more children with leukemia to get quality reading companionship.
